Pakistan, Egypt Hold Fresh Talks as Prospects of US-Iran Agreement Grow

(MENAFN) Pakistan and Egypt continued high-level diplomatic consultations on Sunday, with the two countries' foreign ministers holding their second conversation in less than 24 hours to discuss regional developments and ongoing efforts toward a possible agreement between the United States and Iran.

During the phone call, Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reviewed the latest progress in negotiations aimed at reaching an understanding between Washington and Tehran.

"They expressed hope that these positive developments would contribute to lasting peace, security, and stability across the region," a statement said.

According to reports, Pakistan has remained actively engaged with regional and international partners since helping broker a ceasefire in the conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran in April.

Islamabad has continued to support efforts aimed at securing a lasting resolution to tensions across the Middle East.

The diplomatic activity comes after US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that an agreement with Iran was expected to be signed on Sunday and that the Strait of Hormuz would be “open to all.”

Iranian officials, however, said that a memorandum of understanding with the United States would not be signed on Sunday, although an agreement could still be reached in the coming days.

Regional tensions have remained elevated since US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran in late February sparked retaliatory actions by Tehran against Israel and countries hosting US military assets.

The confrontation also led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important route for global energy shipments.
