Kremlin Warns U.S.-Iran Strikes Threaten Global Economy, Urges Talks

(MENAFN) Russia cautioned Thursday that the latest surge in hostilities between the United States and Iran carries severe risks for the global economy, as Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov renewed calls for all parties to step back from the brink and return to the negotiating table.

"The latest round of escalating tensions is fraught with new, additional negative consequences for the situation in the region and the international economy as a whole," Peskov told reporters at a regular press briefing, urging maximum restraint from every side involved.

The warning came as the U.S.-Iran exchange of strikes entered a second consecutive day. U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark ultimatum to Tehran, warning that further American military action would follow unless Iran accepted a peace agreement immediately. Trump had earlier said Iran had squandered too much time at the negotiating table and would now face consequences.

U.S. Central Command confirmed in a formal statement that American forces conducted strikes against multiple military targets inside Iran from late Wednesday through early Thursday, characterizing the operations as an act of "self-defense" carried out in response to the downing of a U.S. helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz.

The renewed fighting has cast a shadow over diplomatic efforts that had been underway since the April ceasefire, brokered by Pakistan. Those talks have centered on three interlocking objectives: permanently ending the war that erupted on February 28, reopening the Strait of Hormuz — whose closure has severely disrupted global oil and gas exports — and reaching an agreement on the future of Iran's nuclear program.

Moscow's concern has been building for days. The Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday it was "extremely concerned" by the deteriorating situation, issuing its own call for an immediate cessation of strikes and urging all parties to pursue a diplomatic resolution.
