Iran Slams US 'Hypocrisy' as Blockade Threatens Ceasefire Talks
President Masoud Pezeshkian, reaffirming Tehran's stated openness to dialogue and a negotiated settlement, pulled no punches in his assessment: "Breach of commitments, blockade, and threats are the main obstacles to genuine negotiations."
"The world sees your endless hypocritical rhetoric and the contradiction between claims and actions," he wrote on X, the US social media platform.
Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf reinforced that position, arguing that a ceasefire stripped of real enforcement carries little meaning.
"A full ceasefire is only meaningful if it is not violated through a naval blockade or the hostage-taking of the global economy, and if Israeli aggression is halted on all fronts," he said.
Qalibaf went further, insisting that any resumption of normal activity in the Strait of Hormuz was out of the question while what he characterized as a flagrant ceasefire violation remained in effect. He also dismissed the notion that military force or economic coercion could deliver results for Washington and Tel Aviv.
"The US and Israel did not achieve their goals through military aggression, nor will they achieve them through bullying," he said, adding that "the only path forward is to recognize the rights of the Iranian people."
The exchange comes against a backdrop of sharply heightened regional tensions since US and Israeli forces launched coordinated strikes on Iran on Feb. 28 — a move that prompted Tehran to retaliate with strikes on Israel and other regional states hosting US military assets.
US President Donald Trump moved Tuesday to extend a two-week ceasefire with Iran by an additional period, acting a day before the truce was set to expire on Wednesday following a request from Pakistan's prime minister and army chief.
Pakistan hosted direct talks between Washington and Tehran on April 11–12, having brokered the original ceasefire on April 8. Efforts to arrange a further round of negotiations are ongoing, though the path forward remains uncertain.
