US Keeps All Options Open as Iran Deal Talks Continue—Pentagon Chief

(MENAFN) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Monday that Washington is maintaining a full range of options in its approach to Iran, while pressing the country to reach a negotiated agreement.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to Colorado, Hegseth emphasized that President Donald Trump favors a diplomatic solution but affirmed that the US military has contingency plans ready if Iran declines to strike a deal.

“Iran should make a deal. Iran has an opportunity to make a deal. That's the outcome the president would prefer. Our job is to provide options, and we will have options for the president should Iran decide not to take a deal,” he said.

When asked whether military strikes remain an option, Hegseth stated, “everything is on the table.” He added, “It's the president's decision. We're here to help ensure that a deal is made. And I think Iran would be wise to make a good deal.”

Earlier Monday, President Trump dismissed reports claiming that Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine had advised that military action in Iran could involve significant risks and entangle the US in a prolonged regional conflict. On his Truth Social platform, Trump said:
“Numerous stories from the Fake News Media have been circulating stating that General Daniel Caine, sometimes referred to as Razin, is against us going to War with Iran. The story does not attribute this vast wealth of knowledge to anyone, and is 100 percent incorrect.”

The statements highlight a US strategy that balances continued diplomatic pressure on Iran with the implicit threat of military options, keeping Tehran under intense scrutiny as negotiations loom.
