Iran Needs Security Assurance Before Resuming US Talks
(MENAFN) Iran’s foreign minister on Tuesday set forth the requirement of a complete guarantee against any further US military strikes on Iranian territory as a necessary condition to restart nuclear negotiations with Washington.
"I don't think negotiations will restart as quickly as that. In order for us to decide to reengage, we will have to first ensure that America will not revert back to targeting us in a military attack during the negotiations," Abbas Araghchi stated to the US’ a news agency.
“And I think with all these considerations, we still need more time,” he added.
On Monday, the White House acknowledged ongoing communications between US President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Iranian representatives after a ceasefire brought an end to 12 days of hostilities.
Iran’s chief diplomat emphasized that Tehran would not "easily retreat from enrichment," describing the nation’s nuclear program as “a matter of national pride and glory.”
"We demonstrated and confirmed during this 12-day imposed war that we possess the capability to defend ourselves, and we will persist in doing so should any aggression be directed at us," Araghchi remarked.
The conflict between Israel and Iran began on June 13, when Israel carried out airstrikes on Iranian military, nuclear, and civilian targets, resulting in the deaths of at least 935 individuals.
The Health Ministry reported that 5,332 people were injured.
In retaliation, Tehran launched missile and drone attacks on Israel, causing at least 29 fatalities and injuring over 3,400, based on data released by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
